Why Agencies Need Flexible Production Partners More Than Ever
Agency life has never been particularly predictable. One week, everything is moving according to plan. The next, a client needs a new paid social campaign, another needs fresh creative because performance is starting to slip, and a third suddenly wants to launch something two weeks earlier than expected.
The opportunities are good. The timing? Not always. And that’s exactly why we think flexible production partnerships are becoming increasingly valuable for agencies.
Client demand doesn't follow your staffing plan
Agencies have to build teams around a reasonable expectation of client demand. But production needs rarely arrive in a perfectly even flow. There are quiet periods. Then there are weeks when everyone seems to need content at once.
Adding permanent photographers, videographers, editors and production staff for peak demand doesn't always make financial sense. But neither does scrambling for resources every time a new project comes through.
Agency Management Institute’s 2025 research found that 47% of agency leaders had lost staff in the previous year, while salary costs and retention remained significant staffing concerns. That makes flexible capacity increasingly valuable.
A trusted production partner can fill an important gap. Not someone you have to keep busy every week. Someone you already know and trust who can step in when there’s client work to support.
Where a nimble production partner adds value
-
More channels mean more creative: One campaign idea may now need to work across paid social, organic social, websites, email, landing pages, YouTube, creator partnerships and more. And each channel wants something slightly different. Adobe found that 96% of marketers have seen content demand at least double over the past two years, while 71% expect it to increase more than fivefold by 2027. So even when the number of clients stays the same, the amount of content those clients need can keep increasing.
-
Fresh creative keeps campaigns moving: This is especially relevant for paid media agencies. Adobe found that 37% of marketers say they don’t have enough fresh creative variations to keep paid social campaigns timely and relevant. A media team can have the right strategy and audience, but if new creative isn’t available when needed, there’s only so much optimization they can do.
-
Your senior people probably have better things to do: The hidden cost of production isn't always the photographer or videographer invoice. It's the time surrounding it, including finding the location and crew, coordinating calendars, sourcing props, managing equipment, organizing files and overseeing edits. That work can easily land with Account Directors, Creative Directors or agency leaders whose time may be better spent on strategy, client relationships and new business.
-
Saying yes to more shouldn't mean building a bigger team: Flexible production capacity lets agencies say yes to more client opportunities, handle overlapping shoots and last-minute creative needs, and scale what they deliver without adding permanent headcount or giving up control. That can make the difference between “We need to see if we can accommodate that” and “Yes, we can handle it.”
-
A production partner that fits your agency model: A strong partner should be able to work behind the scenes as an extension of your team or directly with your client, depending on your preference. The agency maintains the client relationship and strategic lead, while the production partner brings the production expertise to help get the work made.
-
A trusted team that helps every shoot go further: Once everyone is together, the goal is to make the most of the day. Start with the client’s business goals and the stories they want to tell, then build the production plan around capturing content that can be used across multiple formats and channels for weeks or even months. One interview might become a hero video, short-form clips, paid social variations, still photography and behind-the-scenes content.
This is exactly why we built AFTR
After years of sitting on the brand side of the table, I kept seeing the same issue. There were plenty of talented photographers, videographers, studios and editors. The problem was having to coordinate all of them, often starting from scratch each time.
AFTR was built to bring more of the production experience together into one streamlined process. We provide agencies with flexible photo and video production support in Los Angeles, including our own location, or we can go on location, along with photography, videography, equipment, props, green screen, creative planning and optional post-production editing.
And we can work behind the scenes as an extension of the agency or directly with the client, whatever makes the most sense for the relationship.
The idea isn't to replace an agency's internal capabilities. It's to give those capabilities somewhere to expand when they need to.
A strong production partner can mean less scrambling when projects overlap, less internal time spent coordinating vendors, more flexibility when clients need something quickly and a simpler way to keep fresh creative moving.
Because when the next client says, “Can we get this produced next week?” it’s a lot better to already know who you're going to call.
